Donations and tax in Greece, explained

In Greece, individuals reduce their tax by 20% of their donations to bodies recognised by law (associations with a public-benefit or cultural purpose, recognised sports clubs, parishes…), if their donations for the year exceed €100. The amount taken into account cannot exceed 5% of their taxable income.

  • It is 40% (up to 40% of taxable income) for a public-benefit foundation (κοινωφελές ίδρυμα) or an organisation listed in the special register of civil society organisations (ΟΚοιΠ). Donors enter their donations in their tax return (E1) with the association's AFM (ΑΦΜ) and keep Donoor's donation confirmation and their bank statement.
  • The law requires donations to be paid into a bank account reserved for donations: set this account as your Stripe payout account. An association serving only its members gives no right to a reduction. Once our team has checked your AFM and your legal form, Donoor shows the reduction on your public page and donation pages; the « Greece » card in your settings tells you where you stand.
  • Donoor does not issue Greek tax receipts: each donor receives a confirmation email with your association's name, the date and the amount of their donation.
  • Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Revolut Pay: your donors pay as they usually do, in euros.

Frequently asked questions

Is Donoor available for Greek associations?

Yes. Any association established in Greece (σωματείο, AMKE, foundation, sports club, parish) creates its account, accepts donations in euros by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Revolut Pay, and uses fundraisers, QR codes, ticketing and memberships: sports clubs, cultural associations, choirs, parents', neighbourhood or solidarity associations…

How much does Donoor cost for an association?

Nothing: no subscription and 0% Donoor commission. Only Stripe's fees apply, for example 1.5% + €0.25 for a donation by European card, and your donors can choose to cover them.

How does Donoor check my association?

With its AFM (ΑΦΜ), the association's 9-digit tax number (the « EL… » VAT number contains the same number). There is no national public register of associations in Greece: our team checks your number and your legal form (σωματείο, AMKE, sports club, foundation…) and may ask you for your association's registration document. Your public page opens as soon as it has been checked.

Which payment methods can my donors use?

Bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link and Revolut Pay. SEPA Direct Debit can be switched on in your settings. IRIS is not offered by Stripe. Tap to Pay, contactless payment with a phone, is not yet offered by Stripe in Greece: to collect in person, use a QR code or a payment link.

Do my donors get a tax reduction?

Yes, if your association is one of the bodies recognised by law (public-benefit or cultural purpose, sports club recognised by the ΓΓΑ, parish…): individuals reduce their tax by 20% of their donations, if their donations for the year exceed €100, up to 5% of their taxable income. It is 40% for a public-benefit foundation or a registered civil society organisation (ΟΚοιΠ). For an association serving only its members, there is no reduction.

Which documents should my donor keep?

They enter their donations in their tax return (E1) with your association's AFM (ΑΦΜ), shown on your page, and keep Donoor's confirmation email and their bank statement; you can also give them a receipt signed by your association. The law requires donations to arrive in a bank account reserved for donations: set it as your Stripe payout account.

Do I need an authorisation to collect donations?

In Greece, Law 5101/1931 prohibits collecting money from the public (έρανοι) without an authorisation, issued by the Region for a charitable or public-benefit purpose; raffles too. No official text clearly says whether donations received online on an association's page are covered. Donoor blocks nothing: before a large fundraising appeal, check with your Region or a lawyer.

Can I sell tickets and items in a shop?

Yes, ticketing and the shop are open: tickets, membership fees and items are paid online. Your accounting and tax obligations (proof of sale, VAT) remain those of your association: if in doubt, check with your accountant.

Where does the donation money go?

To your association's Stripe account, then to its bank account, in euros. Donoor never holds the funds.

Can a religious association (parish, mosque, synagogue…) use Donoor?

Yes, like any association: donations by card, Revolut Pay and QR codes. Donations to a parish (ιερός ναός) or a monastery give the donor the 20% tax reduction, above €100 of donations in the year.
