Donations and tax in Bulgaria, explained

In Bulgaria, an individual deducts their donations from their taxable income, up to 5% of that income, when they give to a public-benefit association or foundation, a chitalishte or a registered religious community. As income tax is 10%, the saving is about 10% of the donation.

  • The deduction is claimed in the annual income tax return. The donor attaches proof that the donation was received (Donoor's confirmation e-mail or their bank statement) and proof of the association's status, for example its entry in the Registry Agency's register. All donation deductions together are capped at 65% of taxable income.
  • A private-benefit association or foundation (в частна полза) gives no deduction. Once our team has checked your EIK and recorded public-benefit, chitalishte or religious-community status, Donoor shows it on your public page and donation pages, with the link to your entry in the register; the "Bulgaria" card in your settings tells you where you stand.
  • Donoor does not yet issue a Bulgarian donation document: each donor receives a confirmation e-mail with your association's name and the date and amount of their donation.
  • Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Revolut Pay: your donors pay the way they are used to, in euros.

Frequently asked questions

Is Donoor available to Bulgarian associations?

Yes. Any association based in Bulgaria (сдружение, фондация, читалище, registered religious community) creates its account, accepts donations in euros by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Revolut Pay, and uses fundraisers, QR codes, ticketing and memberships: sports clubs, chitalishta, choirs, parents', neighbourhood or solidarity associations…

How much does Donoor cost an association?

Nothing: €0 subscription and 0% Donoor commission. Only Stripe's fees apply, for example 1.5% + €0.25 for a donation by European card, and your donors can choose to cover them.

How does Donoor verify my association?

By its EIK (ЕИК), 9 digits (it is also its BULSTAT number; 13 digits for a branch) — not an EGN, the personal number. Our team checks it on the Registry Agency's public portal and records your legal form and status (public or private benefit, chitalishte, religious community). Your public page opens as soon as it is checked.

Which payment methods can my donors use?

Bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link and Revolut Pay. SEPA Direct Debit can be switched on in your settings. ePay.bg, BLINK and SMS donations are not offered. Tap to Pay, contactless payment with a phone, is in beta at Stripe in Bulgaria.

Can my donors deduct their donations from their taxes?

Yes, if your association or foundation has public-benefit status (в обществена полза), or if it is a chitalishte or a registered religious community: an individual deducts their donations from their taxable income, up to 5% of that income. They attach proof of the donation and of the association's status to their tax return. For a private-benefit association (в частна полза), there is no deduction.

Which documents should my donor keep?

The law asks for documents proving that the donation was received and that the association has a status giving the deduction. Your donor keeps Donoor's confirmation e-mail (or their bank statement) and your association's entry in the Registry Agency's register, linked from your page. You can also give them a donation document signed by your association.

Does my association need public-benefit status?

No: any Bulgarian association can use Donoor. Public-benefit status (entered in the register, with an annual report to publish) only changes your donors' tax deduction. If you obtain or lose it, write to our team so that your page stays accurate.

Can I sell tickets and shop items?

Yes, ticketing and the shop stay open. In Bulgaria, a sale paid on site in cash or by card (so also with Tap to Pay) in principle requires a fiscal receipt (Ordinance N-18 / Наредба Н-18), associations included: use your own cash register for it. Donoor does not produce these receipts. A sale paid online is not paid on site, and a donation or membership fee is not a sale. If in doubt, check with your accountant or the tax authority (NRA / НАП).

Where does the donation money go?

To your association's Stripe account, then to its bank account, in euros. Donoor never holds the funds.

Can a religious association (church, mosque, synagogue…) use Donoor?

Yes, like any association: donations by card, Revolut Pay and QR codes. Donations to a religious community registered in Bulgaria are tax-deductible for the donor, up to 5% of their taxable income, like those to a public-benefit association.
