Donations and tax in Slovakia, explained

In Slovakia, a donation does not reduce an individual's tax. Every taxpayer can, however, have 2% of their income tax (3% if they volunteer) paid to an association registered with a notary, at no extra cost.

  • The "2%" is given in the tax return (by 31 March at the latest) or, for an employee, with the "Vyhlásenie" declaration and the employer's certificate (by 30 April at the latest), stating the association's name and IČO. A taxpayer who has done at least 40 hours of volunteering during the year can give 3%.
  • Only associations registered with a notary between 1 September and 15 December of the previous year receive this money: the registration must be renewed every year, and the Chamber of Notaries publishes the list by 15 January at the latest. If your association is on it, Donoor shows it on its public page and donation pages, with its IČO to copy; the "Slovakia" card in your settings reminds you of the dates.
  • Above €3,320 received from the 2%, the association publishes how the money was used in the Commercial Bulletin (Obchodný vestník); above €33,000, it goes to a separate bank account. Donoor does not issue tax receipts in Slovakia.
  • Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Revolut Pay: your donors pay the way they are used to.

Frequently asked questions

Is Donoor available to Slovak associations?

Yes. Any association established in Slovakia (občianske združenie and its local units, foundation, fund, non-profit organisation (n. o.), religious body) creates its account, receives donations in euros by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Revolut Pay, and uses fundraisers, QR codes, ticketing and memberships: sports clubs, folk ensembles, volunteer fire brigades, parents' associations, pensioners' clubs… The website and the app are available in English.

How much does Donoor cost an association?

Nothing: €0 subscription and 0% Donoor commission. Only Stripe's fees apply, for example 1.5% + €0.25 for a donation by European card, and your donors can choose to cover them.

How does Donoor verify my association?

By its IČO, 8 digits — neither the DIČ (tax number) nor the VAT number "SK…". A local unit with its own 12-digit IČO (volunteer fire brigade, parents' association…) signs up with it. Donoor finds your association by its name or IČO in the Register of Legal Entities (RPO), copied and updated every day, and verifies it straight away. Otherwise (trade union, association registered a few hours ago…), the Donoor team checks it.

Which payment methods can my donors use?

Bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link and Revolut Pay. SEPA Direct Debit can be switched on in your settings. PAY by square and Slovak banks' payment buttons are not offered. Tap to Pay, contactless payment with a phone, is in beta with Stripe in Slovakia.

Can my donors deduct their donations from their taxes?

No: in Slovakia, a donation does not reduce an individual's tax, so Donoor does not issue tax receipts; the donor receives the confirmation e-mail of their donation, which serves as proof of payment. But every taxpayer can have 2% of their income tax (3% if they volunteer) paid to an association registered with a notary, at no extra cost. A company can also give 2% of its tax, or 1% if it has not itself donated at least 0.5% of its tax during the year.

What is the "2% of income tax"?

Every taxpayer can have 2% of the income tax they have paid — 3% if they have done at least 40 hours of volunteering during the year — paid to a single association, at no extra cost: in their tax return (31 March) or with the "Vyhlásenie" declaration submitted with their employer's certificate (30 April), with the association's name and IČO. The association must be registered with a notary between 1 September and 15 December of the previous year. If yours is on this year's list, Donoor shows it on its page with its IČO.

Does my association have to register every year?

Yes: to receive the 2%, the registration with a notary (any notary) must be renewed every year, between 1 September and 15 December, with a bank certificate for the account that will receive the money. The "Slovakia" card in your Donoor settings shows whether your association is on this year's list and reminds you of the dates; Donoor also e-mails you on 1 September and 1 December. Donoor cannot register on your behalf.

Can I sell tickets and shop items?

Yes, ticketing and the shop stay open. The eKasa cash register only concerns an association that holds a trade licence (živnosť) and takes payment for a sale on site, in cash or by card (so also with Tap to Pay): it then also records the sale in its eKasa cash register (the tax authority's free app is enough). Donoor does not produce these receipts. A sale paid online is in principle not an on-site sale, and donations and membership fees are not sales; if in doubt, check with your accountant or the tax authority (Finančná správa).

Where does the donation money go?

To your association's Stripe account, then to its bank account, in euros. Donoor never holds the funds.

Can a religious association (parish, church, mosque…) use Donoor?

Yes, like any association: donations by card, Revolut Pay and QR codes. Parishes and other religious bodies listed in the register are found by their IČO and verified straight away. The law does not list parishes among the recipients of the 2% of income tax; a church establishment (such as Charita) registered with a notary can receive it.

Association data: Register právnických osôb (RPO) of the Slovak Ministry of the Interior, published under the CC BY 4.0 licence and updated every day; recipients of the 2%: list of the Notárska komora SR. Data extracted and formatted by Donoor.
