How do I delete my account and personal data?
To request the deletion of your account and data, write to contact@donoor.org from the email address linked to your donor account: there is currently no instant deletion button in the donor area. Your personal information (name, email, address) is then anonymised. However, some data must be kept for longer, because the law requires it: accounting documents and tax receipts are kept for 10 years, without your identity remaining attached to them.
How to request the deletion of my account
- Send an email to contact@donoor.org, from the email address linked to your donor account (this is how we verify that the request really comes from you).
- State clearly that you are requesting the deletion of your account and personal data. Mention whether you have made donations to several associations with this same address: the request will apply to your whole account, not to one particular association.
- Keep a copy of your request (a screenshot or the sent email), in case you need to refer to it later, for example if you had to contact the CNIL (the French data protection authority) in the absence of a reply.
If you have an active monthly donation when you make the request, it is stopped automatically before your data is anonymised: no direct debit continues after your account is deleted. To stop a monthly donation yourself without waiting, see how to set up, change or stop a monthly donation. To create or recover your account before requesting its deletion, see how to create, recover and update my donor account.
What happens to my data after the request
Your name and email address are replaced with anonymous values, and your postal address is erased. You can no longer log in again with your old email address, as it no longer exists: this deletion is irreversible.
The amounts and dates of your past donations remain recorded, but without your name or email: this is what the law requires for the accounting of associations and of Donoor, for 10 years. A tax receipt already issued before your request keeps, however, the name and address that were yours at the time it was issued: it is an already generated PDF document, which cannot be modified afterwards. To learn more about these receipts, see how to get my tax receipt.
| Data | After your request | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Name, email, postal address | Replaced with anonymous values, or erased | Right to erasure (GDPR) |
| Active monthly donation | Stopped automatically | No direct debit may continue on a deleted account |
| Amounts and dates of your past donations | Kept, but without your identity | Accounting obligation, 10 years |
| Tax receipts already issued | Kept as they are, original name included | Legal document already delivered, cannot be modified afterwards |
Important: this deletion is final. If you ever wish to give to an association on Donoor again, you will need to create a new donor area, with no history.
Why some data is kept despite my request
Donoor distinguishes three types of data, with different retention periods:
- your account data (name, email) is normally kept for the duration of your account's use, plus one year;
- tax data (your donations and receipts) is kept for 10 years, because the law requires it of associations and of Donoor;
- payment data follows the legal obligations specific to each payment method.
A deletion request does not change these legal periods: it removes what could identify you (name, email, address), but not the amounts and dates that must remain in the accounts.
Your other rights over your data
Beyond deletion, the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) also gives you the right to obtain a copy of your data, to correct inaccurate information, to receive your data in a portable form, to object to certain processing or to restrict some of it. These rights are exercised in the same way, by email to contact@donoor.org. For the security of your information in general, see also is my banking and personal information protected.
Good to know: the law gives the organisation contacted one month to respond to a request to exercise your rights, this period can be extended to three months for a complex request, provided that you are told the reason. If there is no reply or in case of refusal, you may refer the matter to the CNIL.
Key takeaways
- Deletion is requested by email to contact@donoor.org, from the email address of your account: there is not yet a button in the donor area.
- An active monthly donation is stopped automatically before your data is deleted.
- Your name, email and address are anonymised or erased; you will no longer be able to log in with your old address.
- The amounts of your past donations and your tax receipts already issued are kept for 10 years, as the law requires, but without revealing your identity for the donations themselves.
- You also have the other GDPR rights (access, rectification, portability, objection, restriction), to be exercised in the same way by email.
