How do I collect zakat online with Donoor?
To collect zakat online, create a dedicated Donoor fundraiser, with a fundraising goal if you wish, then share it by QR code and payment link with your community. If your association is authorised to issue tax receipts and has switched on the service, each donor automatically receives their receipt by email.
This article is factual from a technical standpoint. For the religious rules of zakat itself, who must pay it, from what amount, and to whom it may be given, please contact your imam or your mosque's religious council.
Create a fundraiser dedicated to zakat
- In the menu, click Fundraisers, then New fundraiser.
- Give it a title that clearly identifies the collection, for example zakat for the current year, and describe the beneficiaries of the project.
- Switch on Set a goal if you want to display a progress bar.
- If your association has already activated the tax receipt service, the Tax-deductible option is ticked by default.
- Click Create the fundraiser, then Make it live as soon as it is ready.
Keep zakat separate from other collections, for example iftar or sadaqa, in a separate fundraiser: your donors know exactly what their gift is for, and you track its total independently of your other projects. Once the year is over, open the menu on its card in the fundraisers list and click Duplicate to start the following year with the same settings.
Good to know: if you want to let your donors choose not to appear in the public donor list of the fundraiser, switch on Allow anonymous donations in its settings.
Share the collection with your community
On your fundraiser's card, the Share button opens WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Telegram, Messenger, SMS or email, with the link already ready to paste. The same panel gives access to the fundraiser's QR code, which can be printed as a poster for the mosque. The full range of channels available during Ramadan, QR code, poster, screen, is explained in how to collect donations during Ramadan with Donoor, and tips for reaching more donors are in how to make your fundraiser known and collect more donations.
The tax receipt for a zakat donation
Zakat has no special tax status: it follows exactly the same rules as any other donation. It is tax-deductible if the association receiving it is authorised to issue tax receipts and has activated the service on Donoor; each donor then receives their receipt by email, provided they have entered their full name and address. This question is detailed in is zakat tax-deductible in France. For mosques, the eligibility conditions are explained in can a mosque issue a tax receipt for donations.
Zakat al-fitr, a separate collection
Zakat al-fitr is not the same as zakat: it is usually paid as a fixed sum per person, before the Eid prayer, whereas zakat follows a calculation specific to each donor's situation, with no deadline set by Donoor. Both can be collected online, but it is better to give each its own separate fundraiser so that your donors clearly understand what their gift is for. Collecting zakat al-fitr before Eid, with an end date and real-time tracking, is detailed in how to collect donations during Ramadan with Donoor.
Important: do not mix the two in a single fundraiser. The amount, the deadline and the beneficiaries of each are governed by religious rules specific to your mosque: ask your imam before launching the collection.
Track and distribute the collection
In your fundraiser, the Donors tab lists every donation received, and the Stats tab shows how the collection has developed day by day. This tracking helps you decide when to distribute the funds, particularly for a collection limited in time.
