How do I organise a fundraising campaign for a mosque?

To organise a fundraising campaign for a mosque, register the association on Donoor and connect Stripe or PayPal, then choose the tools that suit your community: a QR code to display in the mosque for donations by phone, Tap to Pay to take payments in person, and a fundraising page or payment link to reach beyond the mosque walls. Everything is tracked in real time from the dashboard, with no cash box or collection box to empty.

Donoor does not charge any commission on donations received: only Stripe or PayPal's bank fees apply, and donors can choose to cover them.

Before you start

Register your mosque in a few minutes with its RNA, WALDEC or SIRET number if it has one, then connect Stripe or PayPal from Settings › Fundraising process: this is the account that will receive donations directly, Donoor never holds them. To create a donation QR code, a connected Stripe account is required: with PayPal alone, the dashboard will ask you to set up Stripe Connect before you can continue. Take the opportunity to also complete your association's web page: it will bring together your presentation, your opening times and all your fundraising campaigns.

Collecting without a cash box, with a QR code

  1. In the menu, click QR codes, then New QR code.
  2. Give it a name and a Location ("Main entrance", "Prayer hall"…).
  3. If needed, add a Fundraising goal: an amount to reach and a progress bar, for example to fund building works or the purchase of prayer mats.
  4. Under Customisation, choose the colours and add your logo in the centre.
  5. Click Create QR code, then Download to get an image ready to print.

From the QR code's page, the Create a poster button opens an editor with ready-to-use templates, including a "Spiritual" style, from A6 flyers to large A2 posters: print some for the entrance, the tables and the display stands. You can create up to 50 QR codes: one per location or per purpose (general fundraising, Ramadan, building works…) so you can compare what works best. Details of this tool are explained in donation QR codes.

Worshippers do not need to install anything: they open their phone's camera, point it at the QR code, land on your donation page and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Tip: before a major fundraising moment (a Friday prayer, an iftar meal), test a £1 payment with your QR code and arrange for a volunteer to help worshippers who have never scanned a QR code before.

Taking payments in person with Tap to Pay

For worshippers who prefer to give in person, a volunteer can accept a bank card directly on their phone, with no terminal to buy: this is Tap to Pay. It works on iPhone (XS or newer, iOS 16.4 minimum) and on Android (11 minimum, with NFC enabled), and goes through Stripe only.

  1. In Settings › Team, click Invite a member, enter their email address and choose the Volunteer role: they will be able to take payments, without seeing donation amounts or payouts.
  2. The volunteer installs the Donoor app on their phone and taps the Collect button.
  3. They hold the donor's card, Apple Pay or Google Pay near the top of the iPhone or the back of the Android phone, until the confirmation signal appears.

Each member takes payments on their own phone: during a large gathering, several volunteers can collect at the same time, at different points in the mosque.

Following the fundraising live

For a major occasion, display the fundraising on a screen or television: open TV display from the menu, choose your QR code and click Full screen. The amount raised animates with each new donation, which encourages people to take part. For more detail, Fundraising › Donations in the dashboard lists every donation, with a filter by source (QR codes, Tap to Pay, payment link).

ToolWhen to use itWhat you need
QR code and posterWorshippers present in the mosque, with their phoneA connected Stripe account; nothing to buy
Tap to PayA donation given in person, without cash or a terminalA recent iPhone or Android, Tap to Pay eligibility
Payment linkA message sent by SMS, WhatsApp or emailNothing to print, just a link to share
Fundraising pageA specific project to fund over time (building works, equipment)A visible goal, tracked over several weeks

Zakat, Ramadan and tax receipts

Donoor also lets you collect zakat and Ramadan donations: the rules for calculating and distributing them (amount, beneficiaries, date) are set by the imam or the religious council of your mosque, not by Donoor. To organise these collections, read how to collect donations during Ramadan and how to collect zakat online.

If your mosque issues tax receipts through Donoor, every donation made by QR code, Tap to Pay or payment link automatically receives one by email. The conditions under which a mosque can issue tax receipts are explained in can a mosque issue a tax receipt for donations.

Good to know: to receive regular donations throughout the year, and not just during an event, create an online fundraising page with a permanent goal.
