What are the transaction fees?

Transaction fees are the charges retained by your payment provider, Stripe or PayPal, on each payment made by card or through a PayPal account. Donoor adds no commission on top: the difference between the amount paid by the donor and the amount paid out to your account comes solely from the provider.

To find out whether Donoor is free overall, beyond these fees alone, read Is Donoor really free?.

Why these fees exist

Accepting a card or PayPal payment carries a banking cost with every provider on the market, regardless of the fundraising platform used. Stripe and PayPal set their own rates and publish them on their official pages: Stripe's pricing page and PayPal's pricing page. These rates may change and depend on the type of card or on your association's status with the provider: Donoor does not set them and adds nothing on top.

What is the difference between banking fees and the Donoor commission?

Banking fees pay the provider that processes the payment: they apply on any fundraising platform, with any provider. The Donoor commission, on the other hand, is zero: Donoor never takes a percentage of your donations, membership fees or sales. In the financial details of a payment, you will therefore only see a fee line in the provider's name, never a Donoor commission line.

Seeing the exact amount of each payment

The actual amount of the fees varies depending on the provider used, the donor's card type, the country where the card was issued, and whether it is a one-off donation or a recurring direct debit. Rather than a theoretical percentage that would not match your situation, check the exact breakdown of each payment in your dashboard.

  1. Open Fundraising › Donations in your dashboard.
  2. Click the donation line you are interested in.
  3. In the Donation details record, locate the Net amount received.
  4. Open the Financial details to see the full breakdown of the payment.
Financial details lineWhat it shows
Paid by the donorThe total amount settled, including fees if the donor covered them
Stripe fees or PayPal feesThe amount retained by the provider for this payment
RefundedShown only if this payment has been refunded, in part or in full
Paid out to your Stripe or PayPalThe net amount that actually goes to your association

Important: if the donor covered the fees but their card ended up costing more than expected, for example a card issued outside Europe or a business card, the dashboard shows this clearly: the amount covered, the actual cost and the part that nonetheless remains payable by your association appear in the financial details.

Who pays these fees

By default, when paying, a Cover Stripe fees or Cover PayPal fees box is ticked for the donor or buyer: the label shows the provider actually used for that payment. If they leave it ticked, they add the equivalent of the fees to their payment, and your association receives the full amount. If they untick it, the fees are simply deducted from what you receive. The full workings of this option, for a donation, a membership or a ticket, are explained in can donors cover the fees.

Tip: if your association has connected Stripe and PayPal, the label of the box adapts automatically to the provider used for that specific payment, not to all of your payment methods combined.

What does not exist at Donoor

Beyond the payment provider's fees, there is nothing else to pay: no withdrawal fees when money is transferred to your bank account, no activation fees for tax receipts, QR codes or ticketing, no monthly subscription. This remains true whatever the type of fundraising, be it a one-off donation, a recurring donation, a membership, a ticket or a shop purchase. The schedule for payouts of what is due to you, once the fees have been retained, is explained in when do I receive donations.

Good to know: if the donor covers these fees, the corresponding amount is still included in their tax receipt, since it has been paid in favour of your association.

Key takeaways

  • The only fees that exist are those of the payment provider, Stripe or PayPal, never a Donoor commission.
  • The exact amount of each payment is visible in your dashboard, donation by donation, in the donation details.
  • The donor or buyer can cover these fees so that your association receives 100% of the amount.
  • Stripe's and PayPal's official rates are published on their own pages, and may change independently of Donoor.
