Is zakat tax-deductible in France?

Yes, zakat can qualify for a tax reduction, exactly like any other donation: the French tax authority does not give it any special status. What matters is not the name you give your payment, but two specific conditions: the organisation receiving it must be authorised to issue tax receipts, and the payment must be made without any return.

This article deliberately stays factual on the tax side. For the religious rules of zakat itself (who must pay it, from what amount, to whom it may be given, and when), please speak to your imam or your mosque's religious council.

What matters to the tax authority is not the name of the donation

Zakat, sadaqa, donation, membership fee: for tax purposes, these words make no difference in themselves. The tax reduction for donations, provided for under Article 200 of the French General Tax Code (Code général des impôts), applies to any payment that meets two conditions, whether it is called a donation, a membership fee or anything else:

  • The receiving organisation is eligible. That is, a cultural association (association cultuelle) properly registered, or an association recognised as being of general interest (reconnue d'intérêt général). Not every mosque is automatically eligible: see can a mosque issue a tax receipt for donations.
  • The payment is made without any return. It must stem from a gratuitous intention: given free of charge, with no direct or indirect benefit in return for the person paying. A genuine zakat, paid to help beneficiaries without receiving anything in exchange, meets this condition.

On the other hand, purely symbolic benefits linked to membership, such as the right to vote at the general meeting or an honorary title, are not considered a return: they do not prevent the deduction. What prevents it is the handover of a good or service in exchange for the payment.

If the mosque receiving your zakat is authorised

The donation then qualifies for a tax reduction of 66% of its amount, up to a limit of 20% of your taxable income. For example, for €300 of zakat paid in one year to an authorised mosque, you obtain a tax reduction of €198: your donation therefore costs you, after tax, €102.

Amount paidTax reduction (66%)Real cost after tax
€50€33€17
€300€198€102
€1,000€660€340

Above 20% of your taxable income, the reduction no longer applies, for the current year, to the part that exceeds this ceiling.

Good to know: it is not Donoor that decides whether a mosque is entitled to issue tax receipts. Donoor examines the file the association provides and activates the service if everything is in order, but the association itself remains responsible for its eligibility.

How to find out whether your mosque is authorised?

The simplest way: if the mosque has activated the service on Donoor, you automatically receive your tax receipt by email, just after your donation, provided you have given your full name and address. If you have not received it, there are two options: ask the mosque directly whether it is authorised, or see how do I get my tax receipt. The rules for calculating the reduction, for a donation as for a membership fee, are detailed in what tax reduction for a donation, a membership fee or a purchase.

Zakat paid outside an association

Zakat given directly, in cash, to a person in need, without going through an association, cannot give rise to any tax receipt: only an authorised organisation can issue one. This does not change the religious validity of the gift, but for tax purposes, without a receipt, no tax reduction is possible. Routing your zakat through an authorised association, for example via Donoor, allows it to be distributed to beneficiaries and, if the association is eligible, to obtain a tax receipt.

Zakat al-fitr and other religious donations

The same rule applies to all payments made in a religious context: zakat, zakat al-fitr, sadaqa, alms. None has a special tax status; all follow the same two conditions, an authorised organisation and the absence of any return. To collect them online during Ramadan or as Eid approaches, see how to collect zakat online with Donoor.

Key takeaways

  • It is deductible if the receiving organisation is authorised to issue tax receipts, and if it is paid without any return.
  • The usual rate is 66% of the amount paid, up to 20% of taxable income.
  • Example: €300 of zakat gives €198 of tax reduction, a real cost of €102 for the donor.
  • For the religious rules of zakat itself, please speak to your imam or your mosque's religious council.
